The 5 Steps to Crafting a Compelling Marketing Message

marketing message messaging Jan 25, 2022

You only have one chance to tell your audience about the unique benefits your product or service offers. In order to do this, you have to craft the right marketing message that will grab your target customer’s attention and convince them to buy. Here are the 5 steps to crafting a compelling marketing message.

Know Your Audience

The first step is to get to know your audience on an individual level. You need to understand who they are and how they feel before you can sell to them. In order to do this, you should create a customer profile that includes demographic information as well as data on their values and behaviours. You need to identify the struggle they face so that you can help them overcome it with your offering.

You may have a good idea of your target audience already, but in order to create an effective profile, you need to use objective data from the members of this market segment themselves. Find out where your audience hangs out online and go there to engage with them and listen to them to gain insights.

Discover What Sets You Apart

The market is full of companies offering similar products that help solve the same problem. Your marketing message needs to explain clearly what makes you different. This is called your unique value proposition. It shows where you fit in the market.

Again, you may have an idea of what sets you apart, but you’ll need to conduct some research to truly nail it down. Start by looking at the competition to see what they offer and compare it to yours.

You can also uncover your unique selling point by talking to your customers. Ask them why they chose you over a competitor or why they continue to buy from you. They’ll tell you what makes you special.

Craft Your Message

Now that you know who your audience is and what they like about your product or service, you can create a marketing message that emphasises this key point. Your message should be short and clear so that anyone who glances at it will get it immediately.

It should discuss your offer in terms of how it uniquely helps the customer solve their problems. It should explain each feature in terms of the benefit it offers. Paint a picture of what the customer’s life will be like once they’re using your product or service.

Adjust and Communicate

Once you have your copy written, the next step is to decide where you will use it. Identify the marketing channels you use to communicate with your audience. Choose the types of content and adjust your message to suit them.

For example, you might have a blog on your company website. Through the blog, give your audience helpful tips to solve a problem they’re facing. At the end of each post, deliver your marketing message and give readers a call to action. Adapt in the same way for videos, email newsletters, social media content, and all other content types.

Review and Refine

Once you start using your marketing message, monitor all your content and communication channels to see what’s working and what isn’t. Make minor changes and test to see which components convert best. You can keep refining your message over time to make it even more effective.
